US presidential candidate Donald Trump spoke out in support of cryptocurrency during a special event for Trump NFT holders at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Wednesday evening.

The struggling, 2024-hopeful former US president lamented that crypto firms are fleeing America.

“Cryptocurrencies are leaving the United States because of the hostility towards cryptocurrencies,” Trump said. “We will stop it because I don’t want it: if we want to embrace it, we have to leave them here.”

Responding to questions from the cryptocurrency-savvy audience, Trump said he would welcome campaign donations in Bitcoin and other tokens.

Trump’s shift of opinions towards digital resources comes as analysts suggested Tuesday that its winning the US presidential elections in November would be positive for Bitcoin. And he went after the current president, claiming that Pres. Joe Biden ignores cryptocurrencies.

“Biden doesn’t know,” Trump told the crowd, also taking aim at the chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

“[Gary] Gensler is absolutely against it, the Democrats are absolutely against it,” Trump said. “But I’m fine with it.”

Ron Hammond, director of government relations at the Blockchain Association, drew a connection between the Mar-a-Lago event and the passage of a resolution in the U.S. House condemning the SEC’s policy on crypto banking.

“I didn’t think cryptocurrencies would be an election issue, but today’s opposing statements proved it,” he tweeted. “Twenty-one Democrats voted against their party today realizing this trend: being part of the anti-crypto army is a losing proposition.”

In April, prices for Solana-based meme coins will be characterized caricatures of Trump and Biden have increased, according to blockchain data from DexScreener. At one point, “Jeo Boden” and “Doland Tremp” had market capitalizations of $473 million and $83 million, respectively.

Hearing that a token mocking Joe Biden was worth $240 million, Trump She said: “That’s a lot of money for one coin, I don’t like this investment.”

Tonight’s event was billed as an “extraordinary dinner held at the president’s home in Palm Beach, Florida,” a perk that came with Trump’s purchase of an NFT.

“President Donald Trump will host an extraordinary evening for some special Trump Trading Card holders,” the official website advertised. “Dubbed the Winter White House, you’ll have a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the president’s historic residence and exclusive members’ club.”
