Ethereum Bull Trap: A Double-Edged Sword for Investors; Two Potential Outcomes for ETH Price

Across the crypto community, attention has turned to the potential approval of Ethereum spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs). While some see this as a golden opportunity, a closer look at the implications shows they need to be careful.

As the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) prepares to potentially begin the approval process for Ethereum ETFs, investors find themselves at a crossroads. According to financial analyst Zach Rector, the outcome of this approval process will result in two main scenarios.

Often considered a classic “buy the rumor, sell the news” situation, the first scenario could trigger a rise in Ethereum prices as enthusiasm and speculation increase. Investors typically rush to buy into rumors of regulatory approval, hoping to ride the wave of a favorable outcome.

However, once approval is confirmed, we could see a sharp pullback as these early birds start cashing out, having driven the price up based on speculation more than anything else.

Conversely, if the ETF is rejected or its approval is delayed, we could see a severe market reaction. Investors betting on a green light could suddenly look to dump their holdings, which could cause Ethereum prices to plummet.

This type of selling tends to be more intense than usual as it reflects the disappointment and continued uncertainty surrounding Ethereum’s regulation since the SEC suddenly declared it a security.

Until recently, many market participants were preparing for the SEC to reject Ethereum spot ETF applications. The Commission’s reluctance comes largely from ongoing debates over whether Ethereum should be classified as a security, which remain unresolved. Meanwhile, the agency’s president, Gary Gensler, has avoided commenting personally on the status of Ethereum, even as investigations continue.

Additionally, the SEC’s recent call for ETF applicants to submit updated Form 19b-4 by a specific deadline suggests that a decision may be coming sooner than we think.
