Elon Musk Expresses Surprise at Deepfake YouTube Video Aimed to Scam Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin Holders

A deepfake video featuring You’re here And EspaceX CEO Elon Musk promotion of cryptocurrency scam circulates on video streaming platform Youtubearousing the surprise of the public and the man himself.
What happened: Sunday, a user named DogeDesignereleased a clip from Tesla’s livestream event, purporting to show Musk inviting viewers to deposit their cryptocurrency holdings in exchange for twice as much.
In the video titled “Tesla Unveils a Masterpiece: The Tesla That Will Change the Auto Industry Forever,” an abrupt cut leads to Musk asking viewers to scan a (modified) QR code that would take them to a gifts. The fake Musk tells viewers to do them during the so-called LIVE broadcast.
“On the site you can deposit any amount of Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH), And Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) without any registration. Once done, you will receive double the amount of cryptocurrencies deposited,” said the fake Musk.
THE video was still available on YouTube at the time of writing, with the fraudulent channel strongly resembling Tesla’s original YouTube channel.
Elon Musk expressed his surprise at this development.
Why is this important: Video surfaced two days ago after applying deepfake technology to a video of Musk’s interview with Chris Anderson at a TED conference in Vancouver earlier this year. Musk.
“Yeah. Definitely not me,” Musk said after watching the video.
Last month, Hong Kong’s securities regulator warned the public about a fraudulent cryptocurrency trading platform called “Quantum AI.” which uses deepfakes of Elon Musk to lure victims.
